Need AR recommendations

OK, so I was at the gun shop today and noticed they had some Assault Rifles in stock. For example I looked at an DPMS AR 15 with hard case and 2 x 30 rd mags plus some other accessories for $950 out the door....

BUT...being I have not a clue about what I'm really looking at / for I've been 'trying' to do searches and keep coming up empty. So with all that, I'm here to ask for help. Not even sure I know what kind of help, but here goes....

Now that I've got me my first pistola, I've been thunkin about gettin me some sort of an Assault Rifle. Ya know the kind they'll more than likely ban. In all seriousness I was thinking about something with a good mag size, a fairly common available caliber etc....

Any recommendations?
  • Caliber (most common / recommended)
  • Make and Model
  • Things to look/ask for and what to avoid
  • Prices
  • Accessories
  • Anything else I forgot to ask, or just to new to know
  • Links to threads (if y'all got em)

Again, any help will be appreciated. I do apologize, but my searching both threads and posts for AR AR15 etc....comes back with Nothing Found. I know it can't be the operator, so it must be the site...... :452:
In the mean time.

TIA,
RK

DF,
This maybe a stupid response....first of all thanks. I'll review. Second, I'm interested in any kind of Assault Rifle, because I happened to look at the AR15 didn't want others to think that's the only thing I'm interested in.

The manufacturers I like in no particular order are LMT, Colt and Noveske. It is hard to find LMT and Noveske but you can find marked up Colt's. Hope this helps.

You could buy a Charles Dally lower from these guys www.rainierarms.com and build your own. I have heard good things about CD lately.

"Assault Rifles" is the term used by mass media to propagandize the public that these are weapons of aggression. Maybe the term "Battle Rifles" would be better, as is used in some forums. As for me, I call them "Patriot Rifles," but I'm a weirdo.

I call them weapons of war. Has a nice ring to it.

Actually, as you guys are calling them all very apropriate names, the name that pops for me is.....

Weapons of Survival

When TSHTF these are going to be PRICELESS. That is why me needs to get one. If it isn't already toooo late.

Thanks again for all your inputs/names

Battle Rifle Recommendations

RoadKing,

If you want to learn about battle rifles, I suggest that you visit A Well Regulated Militia.

Organizing the militia would be akin to herding cats who know how to move, shoot & communicate.

If you plan on shooting at 100 yds or less, forget about the AR and save some money with an AK!

But if your heart is set on a AR-15, get a Bushmaster.

Re: Need AR recommendations

Don't plan on building one right now. Buy an assembled carbine when you find one. Parts kits are nearly impossible to get -- probably several months out on backorder.

My favorite AR is the Rock River CAR-15 (compact assault rifle). Get one with a flat-top receiver and a detachable carry handle. The carry handle sights are exceptionally accurate, and the flat-top receiver is generally more desireable in the marketplace (thinking about resale). The CAR-15 has a 6-position M4 collapsible stock and a 16" light-weight barrel.

Get lots of magazines also. 30s are great, but 20s shoot better from a bench. If you get 30s, buy steel mags or "PMags" (polymer) rather than alluminum if you have a choice.

Caliber is 5.56 NATO (.223). ARs weren't really meant for .308 and I doubt any one of them will stand up to heavy use.

However, I'd have to agree with those who say you should get an AK-47. With the AK you get 30 rounds of 30 caliber. Yes, the AR is more accurate out at 300 yards, but most urban combat situations (think roving zombies who haven't eaten in three days) take place at 60 yards.

I don't think 950 for any of the better known brands is a bad deal...

Any of the ARs worth having are usually hard to find and upwards of 1200 bucks...

I'm having trouble finding an complete upper/barrel kit that I want thats instock anywhere...

Same with Mags... I'd think I'd like another 10 pmags and another 10 regular 30 rounders with green followers...
